2018 Writing Contest Winners Announced

Fugue is excited to announce the results of our 2018 Writing Contest, judged by Carmen Maria Machado (prose) and Vijay Seshadri (poetry). Congratulations to contest winners Zinnia Smith (prose, nonfiction) and Seth Simons (poetry), and to runners-up Anne Foster (prose, fiction) and Ernesto L. Abeytia (poetry). As always, the winners will each receive $1000, and all four of these pieces will appear in the upcoming Fall 2018 print issue of Fugue. Stay tuned!

PROSE WINNER:
Zinnia Smith, "American Girl" [nonfiction]

Zinnia Smith is a writer and painter, living in Washington Heights, New York. She will receive her MFA from Stony Brook University this year. Her work has been published with The Southampton Review, East, Story Magazine, Yankee Magazine, and Slab. She likes tequila and protest art.


POETRY WINNER:
Seth Simons, "Again on the Brink of Nuclear War, Apparently"

Seth Simons grew up in New England and lives in the Bay Area, where he works as an entertainment journalist and assistant comedy editor for Paste Magazine. His writing focuses primarily on labor issues in the comedy industry, including the podcast industrial complex, the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater's refusal to pay performers, and the slow demise of iO West.
