about fugue

Begun in 1990 by the faculty in the Department of English at University of Idaho, Fugue has continuously published poetry, plays, fiction, essays, visual-text hybrids, and interviews from established and emerging writers biannually. We take pride in the work we print, writers we publish, and the presentation of each and every issue. Working in collaboration with local and national artists, our covers display some of the finest art from photography and digital art to ink drawings and oil paintings. We believe that each issue is a print and digital artifact of a deep engagement with our culture, and we make it our personal goal that the writing we select and presentation of each issue reflect the reverence we have for art and letters.

Fugue is managed and edited by graduate students in the English and Creative Writing Programs at University of Idaho in Northern Idaho, one of the nation's most beautiful regions covered with wilderness areas, mountains, rivers, and lakes.

The Contest

Every year, Fugue hosts our Annual Writing Contest, publishing winners in both prose and poetry and awarding them $1,000 each. Past judges include Pam Houston, Dorianne Laux, Rodney Jones, Mark Doty, Rick Moody, Ellen Bryant Voigt, Jo Ann Beard, Rebecca McClanahan, Patricia Hampl, Traci Brimhall, Edan Lepucki, and Tony Hoagland.

We are excited to announce that this year's contest judges are Vijay Seshadri (poetry) and Carmen Maria Machado (prose). Go here to submit.

Digital Presence

Like many journals and magazines in recent years, Fugue has entered the world of digital print. While our Summer/Fall issues are still printed hard copy and distributed to contributors and subscribers, we now publish Winter/Spring issues digitally. Digital publication allows us to host our digital content here, on our website, completely free to the public.

Additionally, we host a digital archive of all back issues for free. This archive, managed by the Digital Initiatives Department in the University of Idaho Library, provides Fugue's readers access to over two decades of content.

Past Contributors

Fugue boasts a remarkable list of past contributors, including Steve Almond, Charles Baxter, Stephen Dobyns, Denise Duhamel, Stephen Dunn, B.H. Fairchild, Nick Flynn, Terrance Hayes, Michael Martone, Campbell McGrath, W.S. Merwin, Sharon Olds, Jim Shepard, RT Smith, Virgil Suarez, Melanie Rae Thon, Natasha Trethewey, Anthony Varallo, Robert Wrigley and Dean Young among many many others.

The artwork seen both here on our website and on the cover of Fugue 53 is taken from "Sonic Outpost" by artist Jason Brammer.

General Submissions

Submissions are accepted online only, through Submittable. General Poetry, Fiction, Nonfiction, and Images | Etc. submissions are accepted September 1 through May 1. All material received outside of this period will neither be read nor considered for publication. General submissions must be submitted along with a required submission fee of $3.00 per submission to help pay for online submission services. Multiple submissions will be considered with a separate submission fee for each. All contributors to Fugue receive $15 per accepted piece and a complimentary copy of the journal in which their work appears.

Please send no more than five poems, two short-shorts, one story, or one essay per submission.

Submissions in more than one genre should be submitted separately and require separate submission fees. We consider simultaneous submissions (submissions sent concurrently to another journal or journals) as long as you notify us immediately if a piece you submitted simultaneously has been accepted elsewhere. We try to respond to submissions within 3-6 months, though this varies in the middle and at the end of submission periods when submission volumes are high.

To submit either a general or contest submission, click here.

What You Pay For

An individual copy of the most recent issue is $10. 1 year subscriptions (1 print issue, 1 digital issue) are also $10, or 2 year subscriptions (2 print issues, 2 digital issues) are $18. Vandal Poem of the Day (VPoD) is a public poetry project, which brings relevant contemporary poetry to the University of Idaho and the broader Idaho community. A new poem is published on this website every day during the academic year. Each can be accessed via the use of QR codes, which can be scanned on mobile phones using free QR readers (iTunes QR Reader | Google Play QR Reader), that will be placed around Moscow, Northern Idaho, and the University of Idaho campus.

2015/16 featured poets published by Copper Canyon Press. Copper Canyon is a highly acclaimed, not-for-profit press located in Port Townsend, WA. Their books consistently win national awards, and the poems they have graciously let us publish this year are phenomenal and thought provoking.

2016/17 featured poets from BOA Editions LTD, a not-for-profit publisher based in Rochester, NY.

For the new 2017/18 year, VPoD is excited to feature poets from Persea Books, an independent, literary publishing house founded in 1975 by Michael Braziller and Karen Braziller. Additionally, VPoD has joined forces with the literary journal Fugue.

VPoD encourages people waiting for busses, eating lunch, or otherwise going about their lives, to read a new poem each day on the VPoD website. Further, we hope the poems featured on this site will encourages public conversations about contemporary and enduring topics since the poems are quickly readable, but resonant enough for readers to re-read, think about, and comment on or share using the links at the bottom of each poem.

We operate with these famous lines in mind:

It is difficult

to get the news from poems

yet men die miserably every day

for lack

of what is found there.

-from “Asphodel, That Greeny Flower”
by William Carlos Williams
